Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya – 1/7 Haruhi PVC Figure – Kotobukiya

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, what to say about that anime, it’s a huge name I’m sure everyone has seen it and if they have not seen it they have at least heard of it.  The anime has one of my most favourite female anime characters in it, Yuki Nagato.  However this review is not about her, although I do have many, many, many figurines of her that I will get to ;).  This particular one is about Haruhi.

This figurine is the Suzumiya Haruhi -Beach Side Ver.-  it was manufactured by Kotobukiya and is in the scale of 1/7.  The figurine itself is approx 150mm tall and was produced by HIDE.  As I already mentioned this is from the anime, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya it was released back in November 2008, I bought this figurine from…. …. *flips through notes* Hobby Fan.

First things first, I want to apologize to everyone, there is a pose that she has her shirt on and while we were trying to set up our camera and new lenses we made very, very many shitty pictures of her, in order to put her shirt on and off you must take her head off and remove her arm, after us re-doing the pictures 3x I finally put my foot down and said I no longer want to remove anything from her, so again I’m VERY sorry but we do not have a good quality picture of her with her shirt on.

Accuracy for this figurine.  I cannot recall many scenes in the anime, this would be in reaction to the first season I should point out since it was 2008, where she had worn a bikini or anything like this.  The face of Haruhi is beaming which is normal, which I love.  She seems to either have an excited look on her face or a perpetual scowl which is one of the reasons I love her.  There really isn’t much to say for a figurine like this, the face looks perfect, the hairs done well, her body type looks great.  She’s a 1/7 version of Haruhi kneeling in front of you, immortalized in PVC for your viewing purpose… 10/10 accuracy.

Moving on.  This is my second favourite Haruhi figurine we have in our collection, for some reason I just find it the most attractive out of almost all of them, the sculpting was amazing on this one.  So lets talk about the construction of this figurine.  As I stated earlier, the head and arm do come off in order to take the shirt off, the shirt itself does NOT fit together as flushly as I would like. I am unsure if this is something only mine has, but it is akin to an eyesore when looking at the rest of this figurine.  The knots for the bikini in the front and the back are actually removable so u can put the shirt on, which is interesting because they do sit in the figurine quite flush, you most likely would not of thought them removable unless someone told you otherwise.  Something else I should point out as well, having a few figurines that don’t have peg holes for their feet to go into, you will find you have issues with them falling over frequently.  This figurine is very well balanced and it has never fallen over by itself. However, due to the poorly fitting shirt, I have to give this a 6/10, it really, really is quite bad.

I mentioned in my last review that I was going to get rid of my painting section as I feel its useless for 95% of the figurines in our collection, having a poor paint job on a figurine would be akin to buying a new car and having a bad paint job… it just doesn’t happen… or if it does its incredibly rare, or you accidentally bought a bootleg <you poor bastard>.

Detail in this figurine.  The detail on this is great although I must say that the colors do seem a little dull, as opposed to a good smile company figurine, the colors don’t POP out at you as much, the hair seems a little dull as well.  I wont hold it against this figurine too greatly but I still should comment about it.  The shirt she is wearing is in a dull pastel colour and just doesn’t seem to fit her or her personality at all, I don’t picture her in the anime wearing something like that ever.  The face is done well I have no complaints there although around the hair ties there is a little bit of an imperfection, as well as the hair seem which is very, very, VERY common in figurines.  I’ll give this figurine a 8/10 for detail because of my 2 nitpicks.

Uniqueness, there is very little to say here.  It is a bikini figurine of a popular anime character.  This is a dime a dozen figurine, I’m sure if I put a little bit of effort into looking at all the bikini figurines of haruhi I would find 4-6 more of them.  However, I will point out that I do religiously pick through almost every new release for the past 3 years and I do buy what I consider to be the best of the best.  I do have another Haruhi bikini figurine in our collection and I will rate it in the future.  My point being is that this is just your slightly above average typical bikini figurine… but I will give it bonus marks for not having one of those fake sand bases… 8/10.

So in closing with this figurine, I’m going to give it a thumbs down.  I personally feel this is one of the best bikini figurines I have but this is based fully off personal opinion.  There really is nothing about this figurine that stands out other then the fact you have a shirt on her… which fits VERY poorly.  The base of the figurine is nice, its made of cork so it doesn’t mark the figurine, the figurine is balanced well for a kneeling one, without the shirt she’s very nice to look at.  The figurine is above your standard bikini figurine so if you are looking for a bikini figurine, this is what you should get, for Haruhi at least, however if your on a budget and just wanting to get the best figurines, I’d probably stay away from this one.  32/40 for this figurine.

So how do you like this bikini Haruhi? Would you buy it? Or is it just another bikini figurine?
